Gifts of $5,000 or more can be transformational for our charity.  Donors who share our vision and want to make an investment in the organization are encouraged to set up a meeting with our leadership. We want you to be informed and we also want to know the areas of greatest interest to you.

Our donors have worked hard for their wealth and we want to make sure that every donation made exceeds expectations. Our role at the Charitable Foundation is to simply facilitate the hopes and dreams of our donors to have the greatest impact on those we care for. Allow us to hear about your goals and match them to the needs of the charity. Allow us to share with you our accountability standards and to meet the leaders of the organization who oversee the governance.

We would be pleased to draft a proposal for your consideration that will match your philanthropic wishes to the specific needs of the charity. We can also discuss giving options with your professional advisor to help ensure a solid strategy is created with the greatest benefit.  In many cases, major gifts are made from assets as opposed to income which offer greater tax benefits while supporting your charity of choice.

Corporate Gifts and Sponsorships

There are several opportunities for Companies to support the work of Margaret Bahen Hospice.

Sponsorship is typically the best way to demonstrate that a company’s Corporate Social Responsibility is in alignment with exceptional Hospice Palliative Care for our community.

Our philosophy is to foster a culture of philanthropy and we are extremely careful to ensure that as much of the sponsorship dollars go to supporting services and programs. We keep our advertising and marketing budgets very low but it is our word of mouth that is the most impactful.

We believe in supporting those businesses that support us. We tell everyone that comes into the Margaret Bahen Family which businesses share our vision. We shop local wherever possible and are fortunate that many of our suppliers choose to give back with donations.

Our Signature Events are our Hike for Hospice and our Golf Tournament. There are great opportunities for logo placement at these events or you can contact Jennifer Adams at 905-967-1500 ext. 134 or email donations@myhospice.ca.

As sponsorships generally receive advertising promotion they are not eligible for charitable receipts. Companies are however able to use an acknowledgement receipt to reduce their taxable income as opposed to individual donations who receive a charitable receipt which is used to offset taxes owing. Your personal accountant is the best person to advise you.

Donating securities from a corporation can save you big tax dollars

I was having lunch at a local restaurant recently. The owner shared with me that the Canada Revenue Agency was in the middle of auditing his business. “I wish those tax people would just leave me alone. I work long hours in this business, and so does my family. I only make $75,000 each year,” he said.

“Are they worried about the income you’re reporting?” I asked. “No, it’s the six trips to Barbados for me and my wife that I deducted. I had to explain to the guy that we deliver,” he explained.

That day, we spoke about other, less aggressive, deductions that he might be able to claim to save taxes. He operates his business through a corporation – as many business owners do. Given the time of year, I raised the idea of making charitable gifts through his company. As it turns out, he does have charitable intentions, and has some investments in his corporation that he’s willing to consider donating to save tax. Here’s how that might look.

The rules

Back in 2006, the federal government changed the rules around charitable giving to make it very attractive to donate publicly traded securities rather than cash. In fact, if you have securities that have appreciated in value, donating those securities can save you more tax dollars than a cash gift. This is true for individuals and corporations alike.

To summarize, if you donate securities that have appreciated in value, you can eliminate the tax altogether on the capital gain on those securities. Normally, the capital gains inclusion rate is 50 per cent, meaning that you’ll face tax on one half of any capital gain realized on the disposition (including a donation) of assets that have grown in value. Today, that capital gains inclusion rate is set to zero on the donation of publicly traded securities to a registered charity, so that the capital gain is exempt from tax.

In addition to eliminating the capital gain, you’ll be entitled to a charitable donation receipt for the full value of your securities donated. If your corporation is making the donation, it will be entitled to a tax deduction (as opposed to a tax credit, which is the case for personal donations) for the amount donated. In the case of your corporation, your out-of-pocket cost for making a donation can be as little as 22 cents for each dollar donated. Consider an example.

The example

Martha has a holding company with cash and a portfolio of publicly traded securities. There’s a particular security – shares in ABC Corp. – that has grown in value. She bought the ABC shares at $40 each and now they’re worth $100. She’d like to make a donation to charity using the assets of her corporation.

She’s decided to donate $100,000 worth of the ABC shares. The adjusted cost base on the shares is $40,000. So, donating the shares will trigger a $60,000 capital gain. Fortunately, her company won’t face any tax on that capital gain, as I mentioned. Her company will be entitled to a tax deduction for the $100,000 donated, which will save it $46,000 in taxes assuming a 46-per-cent tax rate (varies by province).

In addition to the taxes saved from the deduction, the corporation saves $13,800 in this example ($60,000 capital gain times 50-per-cent inclusion rate times 46-per-cent corporate tax rate) because the capital gain is tax-free. But there’s more.

Every corporation has something called the “capital dividend account (CDA).” If your company has a positive balance in its CDA, you can pay tax-free capital dividends to yourself as a shareholder, up to that amount. The CDA is increased by the tax-free portion of any capital gain realized by the corporation. So, when Martha’s company donates the ABC shares, the full $60,000 capital gain on the disposition goes into the CDA since it was tax-free. This allows Martha to pay herself $60,000 of tax-free capital dividends afterward.

The tax that would have otherwise been owing on that dividend would be about $18,600 at a marginal tax rate of 31 per cent (varies by province) on eligible dividends.

The bottom line? The total tax benefits from donating securities in this example are about $78,400 ($46,000 from the deduction, plus $13,800 from the tax-free capital gain, plus $18,600 from the tax-free capital dividend). On a $100,000 donation, the after-tax cost to Martha is just $21,600 ($100,000 less $78,400). So, if you’re planning to give to charity this year, consider a donation of securities from your corporation to create hefty tax savings.

Our Legacy Circle is for those donors who have named the Margaret Bahen Hospice for York Region as a beneficiary of their estate. We would like for our future donors to see their name recognized on our donor wall while they are living. Names will be added to our Legacy Circle for donors who have a signed gift confirmation form indicating a future gift of $5,000 or more has been included in their estate plan.
